North Vs. South
One of the biggest problems in Italy is the division between the north and the south. The north, being the richer and south the poor.
Producing Money
South
In the south they mainly produce olives, tobacco, wheat, sugar beats, and tomatoes. So, the money from south Italy relies more on agriculture. Even so, the farms are small so most of the time the farmers aren't making enough to make a profit, only enough to feed the family.
In the south the people only work certain times because of a ritual they honor from certain times. They also have poor transportation where the buses are often late, or there are strikes.
North
The north focused on growing pigs and breeding cattle. Different from the south, the north is based more on factories. Also, because location is everything, things can be produced in the factories in north Italy, and exported easily to countries like Germany and France.
In the north the people work all day long, and usually never stop. Their lives depend on being on time so their trains come on time and they work more efficiently.
Wine though, is an export that is shared equally through out the country.
''It is a reality. In the north you see one factory per kilometer. [In the south] you can travel for 100 kilometers and not see one chimney stack.''-Mariano Lombardi
Unemployment in 1996:
North: 6.3 %
South: 21.4
